Prospective graduate students for the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) must first meet the entrance requirements of the Graduate School. The prospective graduate student applies online to the Graduate School.

In addition to uploading transcripts in the online application, official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions and GRE (Graduate Record Examination) general test scores (ETS code for NMSU is 4531; ETS code for the ECE program is 1203) must also be sent directly to the graduate admissions office. International students must also submit their TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores. If the applicant meets the Graduate School’s minimum requirements, the application is sent to the Klipsch School’s Graduate Studies Committee for review.
Admission to the Klipsch School graduate program does not guarantee a Teaching Assistantship or a Research Assistantship. There will be a limited number of Teaching Assistantships awarded to new graduate students who show outstanding qualifications. Research Assistantships are awarded by the faculty with sponsored research programs. Please see the Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant page for more information.

Q: Can I get accepted into the graduate program in the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering?
A: In general, a prospective student must have at least the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA or better for the MSEE program and a 3.5 GPA or better for the PhD program. In addition to GPA requirements the student is also required to provide 3 letters of recommendation. Although not a firm requirement, a GRE Verbal Reasoning score of 146 (current scale) or better and Quantitative Reasoning score of 155 (current scale) or better are expected. International students must also have either a TOEFL iBT score of 79 or better or an IELTS score of 6.5 or better. For exceptions and more information, please visit the Graduate School’s Website.

Q: What if I do not have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE)?
A: Students without a BSEE take undergraduate “deficiency courses” in order to prepare for graduate study in Electrical and Computer Engineering. For more information click here.

Q: What if I am not accepted into the graduate program in the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering but believe I am capable of graduate electrical and computer engineering work?
A: If an applicant does not meet the requirements of the Klipsch School, they can enter the Graduate School as an “undeclared” major and earn a B or better in two or more E E graduate core courses before they re-apply or switch majors.
